20 Cents from May 2010

It’s time for the next monthly installment of 20 Cents. Is it just me or did it seem like May was only 12 days long? Here are 10 of my favourite articles from around the web for May, 2010.

I try to include a fairly well-rounded selection each month, but 10 slots is just not enough to cover all of the great writing that gets served up each month. I highlight a lot of great articles each day on Twitter. You can follow me @BalanceJunkie.

1. Political Calculations spelled out Three Signs of Economic Trouble in the Modern World. Read the article and find out how many you recognize in today’s economy.

2. Jabulani Lefall wrote about Financial Fear Factors at Wise Bread. The author laments the disappearance of the middle ground along with the middle class and advocates a balanced approach to personal finance where you hope for the best but plan for the worst. That sounds like good advice to me.

3. Brad at Enemy of Debt has softened his anti-credit card position and writes that Your Financial Mindset Determines Your Ability to Handle Credit Cards. He outlines 4 different mindsets about money and debt. Which mindset do you fit in right now? Has that changed over time?

4. Funny about Money, feeling like she’s “busted, disgusted, and can’t be trusted”, wrote Ten Ways to Handle a Budget Shortfall. I’m sure we’ve all been there at one time or another. There are some great austerity measures you can adopt here. Keep them in mind for the next time you find yourself left with more month than money. ;)

5. Moolanomy reminds us that Your Future Financial Security Depends on You . . . And Only You. While some of our retirement planning will involve reliance on stock market returns, pensions, or government programs, it’s unwise to fully depend on any or all of these to finance our future. Read the article to find out a few ways that you can take control of your own financial security.

6. Len Penzo offers 8 Big Reasons Why You’re Getting an F in Personal Finance 101. What about you? How would you grade yourself on these?

7. Pure Financial Education delivers Advice from Around the Globe. These kernels of wisdom come from English students, so the form isn’t always pristine, but I found that it only enhanced the simplicity and wisdom of the messages. Great fundamentals know no borders.

8. Thicken My Wallet asks the perennial “How much is enough?” question in How Do I Determine an Appropriate Savings Rate?

9. Money Ning looks at your primary residence, home improvements, and car and asks Is That Really an Investment? What do you think?

10. Are Taxes in Canada Really That High? Read this article at the Canadian Finance Blog to find out. What’s your take?

I hope you enjoyed these articles as much as I did! :)
