This Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 marks the first anniversary of the stock market bottom. Most markets are up a whopping 70% or so from there, although still down from their earlier peaks. Many would have us believe that we have dodged a bullet, or more accurately, a nuclear missile.
I agree. We have pulled back from the brink and some aspects of the economy are improving. But have we fixed the problems that caused this mess? I guess it depends on who you ask. If you’re like me, you’re tired of hearing a lot of different answers from people with different agendas. If you’re like me, you just want to listen to someone who might actually know the truth and be willing to share it with the rest of us.
I found someone. It’s Elizabeth Warren. I’ve written about her before in the context of my review of her book, All Your Worth. She’s a bankruptcy lawyer, Harvard Professor, and Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel that oversees TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) in the United States. She has no reason not to tell the truth and nothing to gain by hiding anything. She’s a tenured professor, so no one can threaten her livelihood if she says things that make them uncomfortable.
Ms. Warren was a guest on Charlie Rose this past Thursday and provided about 20 minutes of the scarcest commodity around right now: truth. If you want to hear the truth, I urge you to take a few minutes and watch the video of Elizabeth Warren on Charlie Rose. It may be the best investment you make this year.
We haven’t fixed the problems. We need leadership with integrity and honesty to do it. We need someone who is in a position to stand up to the bank lobbyists and do the right thing. We need more people like Elizabeth Warren.
