Sounds like you're pretty lucky Ted. In terms of your wife's business, your mother in law could probably help you navigate some of the red tape. As I said in the article, whether you use a professional or not, you still have to track expenses, mileage, etc.. Good luck with the business!

My mother in law works at a small CPA. She does our taxes for us (she enters in the vast majority of tax information for their customers so she is well versed in what to do) and she can check with the boss on any questions that come up. It is great because she does it for free (wheoo) and I get to learn about the process along the way as she explains it all to us.

Also, if she is ever fired or moves jobs, we can purchase whatever tax software for her and she can continue doing our taxes. She loves it because she saves us money and it is pretty easy for her to do. The only problem is, my wife started a photography biz and it is getting much more complicated, so we will have to hire a CPA soon to navigate all the state and local sales tax laws.

Good for you Shel, and thanks for the information on Audit Defence. I wasn't even aware that was available, but considering that your husband is self-employed, it's probably a great investment. I can guarantee you an accountant would charge a lot more than $40 to represent you!

We were audited once while my husband was a commission salesman and I represented us to the CRA. The woman who was assigned to us was very fair and we ended up doing fine without our accountant's help. We were just very honest with them. Thanks again for the info!

My husband has a contracting business and I work full time. Last year we had our taxes done professionally and it cost over $1100. This year I'm doing our taxes myself using Quicktax Unincorporated and I'm really enjoying it. I'm paying an extra $40 for their Audit Defence, so if I ever do get audited they will go to bat for me. I'm very happy with my choice.
